10 Reasons Why Offshore Drilling isn't a Solution

Tuesday, August 19, 2008, 10:23 AM PST [General]

    10. Offshore oil drilling won't impact gas prices today, and it won't have a significant impact on gas prices in the future.

    9. This is nothing more than a money grab by the oil companies - who are already making record-breaking profits.

    8. We burn 25% of the world's oil here in the U.S., but we have only 3% of the world's oil reserves. So even if all offshore oil magically came to market today, the vast majority of our oil would continue to be imported, and we wouldn't see price relief at the pump.

    7. The current moratorium was put in place decades ago to protect us from the danger of oil spills along our coastlines and beaches.

    6.  Burning fossil fuels like oil causes global warming, which causes stronger hurricanes, which will threaten the very offshore drilling rigs being proposed, which will contribute to even more global warming.

    5. To avoid the worst impacts of global warming, we need to switch from fossil fuels to renewable energy within the next 10 years. The billions of dollars that would be spent on offshore oil drilling just postpones the inevitable transition from fossil fuels to renewable energy.

    4. Oil exploration requires massive seismic testing - which threatens whales and dolphins.

    3. Oil prices are set on the global oil market, so American oil is no cheaper than Saudi oil. We won't get a discount for oil drilled in the U.S.

    2. We can't solve the world's energy problems with the same drilling that created them.

    1. Renewable energy is available now, so it's time to walk away from fossil fuels and toward a clean energy future.

    Hey all, Happy Monday!

I wanted to let the community know about a great cause I just joined today. It's called Mocha Club, and it helps to support various charities in Africa. Basically, you pay 7 dollars a month (the price of two coffee house mochas :)) and you choose where it will be put to good use. I chose to help rebuild Sudan.

Another cool point about this cause is that you create your own group with a social networking profile, and are able to invite friends to join your group and make a donation as well. If anyone would like to join my group for 7 dollars a month, here's my group URL. :) Peace and love!!!

Here is some more info about the cause I'm supporting as well:

Darfur has been entangled in a deadly conflict for over three years. At least 400,000 people have been killed. More than 2 million innocent civilians have been forced to flee their homes and now live in internally displaced-persons (IDP) camps in Sudan.

By supporting "Sudan Regrowth," you will be sustaining two projects:
The first is in the village of Nyamlel, where you will help fund an orphanage for 400 children that have fled as orphans, as well as provide care and rehabilitation for former sex slaves. This work provides all the necessities, including medical care and education.

The second is the relief efforts for those who have fled to the wild with no shelter. You will provide mosquito nets to prevent malaria, wells for clean water, tarps that serve as shelter from the elements, food, and desperately needed medication.

Two Rebel Groups have the political aim of compelling the government of Sudan to address underdevelopment and the political marginalization of the region of Darfur. In response, since early 2003, the Sudanese government's regular armed forces and the Janjaweed (gov’t backed militia) have targeted civilian populations and ethnic groups from which the rebels primarily draw their support. Please become an active part of the solution.
